Welcome to Richmondshire District Scout Council
"Scouting has a rich world wide history stretching back to the early years of the 20th century - and an exciting future. Today there are more Scouts, approximately 28 million, in more countries around the world, than at any stage in the history of Scouting"

Richmondshire District Scout Council - Brief History

Richmond, North Yorkshire was the first town to be called Richmond.

In 1908, Lord Baden-Powell, surveyed a suitable place to site a new military camp and recommended Catterick, near  Richmond. A plaque in Richmond Castle grounds commemorates the stay of Lord Baden Powell.

Extracts of BP’s diary, drawings and a letter of commendation from Theodore Roosevelt, President USA are held in the  archives of Richmond Town Council.

Scouting started in Richmond on 9 March 1909. In July 1909, Baden Powell offered his office as a meeting room whilst  stationed in Richmond.

In recent years over £30,000 has been invested in improving The Scout Hut, Quaker Lane. On Saturday 28 January  2006, The Rt Hon William Hague MP re-dedicated and re-opened1st Richmond Scout Group Headquarters in Quaker  Lane, Richmond.

The vision for the building is for it to be a useful and used resource for the community. Since refurbishment, it’s been used  as accommodation, for Community Education, by Morris dancers and Egyptian Dance Classes.

In addition to the refurbishment of the building new outdoor equipment has been procured enabling the group to put the  OUT in Scouting.

The Group is a strong and participative entity, with many members in its Beaver, Cub and Scout section, led by willing,  able and capable volunteer leaders.

2009 will see the Group celebrating its 100 years anniversary.
